The Three Wine Jewels of Southern Corsica
The South of Corsica shelters three controlled appellation designations that embody the island’s terroir spirit: AOC Figari, AOC Sartène, and AOC Porto-Vecchio. These wines, made from native grape varieties like Sciaccarello or Niellucciu, tell the geological and cultural history of the region.
AOC Figari: The Pirate Red
Nestled at the heart of the Capu di Feno mountains, AOC Figari stands out with its powerful red wines, ideal for pairing with grilled meats or strong cheeses. The vineyards benefit from a unique Mediterranean microclimate, promoting optimal ripening of the grapes.
- Dominant Varieties: Sciaccarello (70%), Niellucciu (20%)
- Annual Production: approximately 150,000 bottles
AOC Sartène: The Subtle Balance
AOC Sartène, situated between lush hills and golden sandy beaches, blends tradition with modernity. Its white and rosé wines express exceptional freshness, while the reds reveal notes of black fruit and underbrush. The town of Sartène, nicknamed “the city of a hundred bell towers,” houses several cooperative cellars where one can taste local cuvées.
- Dominant Varieties: Sciaccarello (65%), Vermentino (25%)
- Annual Production: approximately 350,000 bottles
AOC Porto-Vecchio: The Wine of Light
AOC Porto-Vecchio, sprawling across the southern slopes of the region, benefits from exceptional sunshine. Its rosés, with their salmon hues, have become global references. The whites, meanwhile, offer a fine acidity and remarkable minerality, perfect for summer aperitifs.
- Dominant Varieties: Sciaccarello (70%), Vermentino (20%)
- Annual Production: approximately 250,000 bottles
