Bonifacio: the most spectacular city in the Mediterranean

Perched on white limestone cliffs just 35 minutes from Private Hotel Corsica, Bonifacio is a city that defies both gravity and imagination. Its houses seem suspended above the void, its natural harbor is one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean, and its thousand-year history is written in every stone. Here is our itinerary to make the most of it in one day.

Morning: the Upper Town and the Citadel

9:00 AM — Arrival and climb to the citadel

Leave early from Private Hotel Corsica to arrive in Bonifacio around 9 AM, before the crowds. Park at the upper town parking lot (fee-based but convenient) or at the harbor if you prefer to climb on foot via the historic ramp.

The Saint-Roch ascent already offers you a breathtaking first panorama of the harbor, the cliffs, and on clear days, Sardinia just 12 kilometers away. Pass through the Genoese Gate, the historic entrance to the citadel protected by its drawbridge.

9:30 AM — The fortified old town

Stroll through the narrow streets of the upper town. The tall, tightly-packed medieval houses create a fascinating labyrinth. Don't miss:

  • The Church of Sainte-Marie-Majeure — the oldest in Bonifacio (12th century), with its loggia where locals once administered justice
  • The Bastion of the Standard — a museum and vantage point with unobstructed views of the cliffs
  • The Place d'Armes — the heart of the citadel, lined with cafés shaded by plane trees
  • The Marine Cemetery — one of the most beautiful and moving cemeteries in France, with white chapels overlooking the sea

10:30 AM — The Staircase of the King of Aragon

This is Bonifacio's most vertiginous attraction. 187 steps carved into the cliff face descend vertically toward the sea. Legend tells that they were carved in a single night by the troops of the King of Aragon during the 1420 siege. Reality is likely more prosaic (they were probably access to a water source), but the experience remains breathtaking.

Practical tip: the descent (and especially the climb back up!) is physically demanding. Wear good shoes and take your time. The view from the bottom, facing the expanse of the sea, is worth every step.

Midday: the Harbor and Lunch Break

12:00 PM — The Harbor of Bonifacio

Head back down to the harbor, the true beating heart of the city. This natural fjord, long and narrow, shelters yachts, sailboats, and fishing vessels. The atmosphere is quintessentially Mediterranean, with restaurant terraces lining the quays.

This is the time to have lunch. Harbor restaurants offer fresh seafood cuisine: Bonifacio lobster, grilled fish of the day, sea urchin pasta in season. Budget 30 to 45 euros per person for a full meal with a view of the harbor.

Specialties to taste

  • Eggplants à la Bonifacienne — the local specialty, stuffed and gratinéed
  • Bread of the Dead (in season) — a traditional walnut cake
  • Figari Wine — France's southernmost vineyards, 20 minutes from Bonifacio

Afternoon: Marine Caves and the Lavezzi Islands

2:00 PM — Boat Excursion in the Marine Caves

This is Bonifacio's must-do experience. From the harbor, several companies offer sea cruises of approximately 1 hour that run along the cliffs from the water. You will discover:

  • The Helm of Corsica — a rocky spur shaped like a boat's helm
  • The Cave of Sdragonato — whose roof opening forms the shape of Corsica
  • Saint-Antoine Cave — a spectacular play of light on turquoise water
  • The cliffs from below — the best angle to understand how Bonifacio defies the laws of physics

Expect to pay approximately 25-30 euros per adult. Book in the morning upon arrival to ensure you have a spot.

Alternative: A Day at the Lavezzi Islands

If you have more time, opt for the excursion to the Lavezzi Islands, a granite archipelago classified as a natural reserve between Corsica and Sardinia. The water is so transparent that you can see the bottom at 10 meters depth. Boats drop you off in the morning and pick you up in the afternoon, leaving you free to explore, swim, and picnic on these paradisiacal islets.

  • Duration: half day or full day
  • Price: approximately 35-40 euros round trip
  • To bring: water, picnic, sunscreen, mask and snorkel
  • Important: no shops on the islands, bring everything you need

End of Day: the Sunset

6:30 PM — The Pertusato Lighthouse

To conclude this day beautifully, take the road (or hiking trail, approximately 45 minutes on foot) to the Pertusato Lighthouse, Corsica's southernmost point. The sunset there is spectacular, with Sardinia in silhouette and Bonifacio's cliffs taking on golden hues.

You'll be back at Private Hotel Corsica in 35 minutes, just in time for a final drink on the terrace with a view of the mountains.
